Over the past few years I have been involved in a number of outreach and schools engagement events both through Cardiff University and Bridgend College and this page details a few of these projects - if you are interested in finding out more about my outreach work, please get in touch!

Projects

  • Giant Genes | Cardiff University (2018)

    • This workshop looks at how brain diseases are caused and what research is currently underway to try and treat them. The students learned which parts of the brain control different actions, made genes and had a go at playing with giant genetic blocks!

  • Step Up Masterclasses | Cardiff University (2018) | Site

    • A Cardiff University workshop scheme aimed at inspiring secondary school students from traditionally disadvantaged areas to attend university. The workshops bridge several of the physical sciences including mathematics, computer science, engineering and chemistry. During the sessions, the students built and programmed a Lego spectrophotometer, carried out an experiment and analysed the data using a Raspberry Pi and a simple circuit.

  • Full STEAM Ahead | Cardiff University (2018) | News Article

  • Scholars Programme Tutor | The Brilliant Club (2018)

    • Developed and ran short courses in Mathematics and Engineering aimed at KS3 and KS4 students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds.

    • Partners: The Brilliant Club

  • Primary Coding | First Campus (2018)

    • This project enables primary school students to learn to code in a fun, engaging atmosphere using the BBC Micro:bit. The project involves designing, creating and coding a wearable product which plays rock, paper scissors when the user shakes the device.

  • SMILE Pi & Mash Computing for Schools Event | Bridgend College (2017-2018) | Blog

    • The follow-up to the SMILE Technology Workshops, this event sees over 500 children from 10 primary schools attend Bridgend College for a day of workshops and science shows based around digital technology.

    • Partners: Bridgend College, Cardiff University

  • Brain Games | Cardiff University (2018) | Site

    • Several STEM Ambassadors from the School of Maths assisted in the on-the-day running of one the main one-day engagement projects run by Cardiff University. I was involved in the coordination of the STEM Ambassadors, the organisation of the event prior to the day and in collaboration with Joe Bishop, created ‘feedback collecting’ boxes which were utilised to collect data from participants in the day.

  • Science Week Technology Exhibition | Welsh Government (2018)

    • We (Cardiff University and Bridgend College) were invited to be the sole exhibitors at a science week event held at the Cathays campus of Welsh Government. Showcasing robotics and digital technologies, we built links with policy makers at the highest level of education and are subsequently working closely in collaboration with the Ser Cymru team.

  • SMILE Techonology Workshops | Bridgend College (2017-2018) | Blog

    • The format of this week is to engage over 500 Year 5 and 6 children from 10 local primary schools with emerging technologies and robotics. We use Raspberry Pis, LEGO Mindstorms and Makey Makey to deliver a range of sessions based at giving the children a taste of these fun and interesting technologies.

    • On June 28th 2017, the Cardiff SIAM-IMA Student Chapter organised the one-day ‘Full STEAM Ahead’ event, open to secondary school and FE College students, PhD students and staff. The event consisted of three workshops aimed at inspiring students to engage in STEM subjects, and opened with a short address by Sian Ashton of the STEM Ambassador scheme. The workshops were 3D printing (Alex Safar), Raspberry Pi (Luke Smallman) and Robotics (Emotion robotics) with an article published in Mathematics Today.
